Don’t Say Good Luck…

“You don’t say good luck, you say don’t give up…” – The Fire by The Roots

“You should try the blue one. It’s just at your level. It’ll definitely be a project. But you can do it.”

Little did the setter who said this to me know how much of a project it would be.

Over the course of the next month, I committed to a relationship with this blue V5.

I tried hard. And tried some more.

I learned the moves and made progress.

And I fell a lot.

Yet I couldn’t give up. If I actually sent it, this would be my first V5.

But it was more than that.

I was learning that I could do something I thought I couldn’t, if I kept trying.

Moves that seemed impossible became easy with multiple attempts and continued practice.

My climbing friends, seeing my dedication to this project, came together to offer encouragement, support, and advice.

They checked in on my progress and cheered me on.

They talked me through the frustrating times and inspired me to keep trying.

And when I couldn’t figure out how to make the last move, one of them gave me crucial beta.

After over a month of attempts, one day (the day before I thought the problem might be taken down), it all came together.

I warmed up for a bit and gave it a go – and I just kept going.

The whole climb flowed, and I finally finished it.

Then I ran around the gym, giddy to tell all my friends, who were just as excited as I was.

Everyone knew the effort I had put in. I knew the effort I had put in.

And I knew that it was worth it.

Because now I also know that I truly am capable of so much more than I might initially imagine.

All it takes is not giving up.
